Stotra |

Stotra/Stotram (स्तोत्र): is a Sanskrit word, which means “Ode, Eulogy or A Hymn of Praise”. It is a literary genre of Indian texts designed to be melodically sung, in contrast to shastra which are composed to be recited. A Stotra can be a prayer, a description, or a conversation, but always with a poetic structure. They are the hymns written to praise the god. Suktam & Stotra both have same purpose to pray to god.  A set of shlokas compiled together is called a stotram.

A stotram is an extract from a religious scripture but generally poetic in the praise of God, emphasizing His qualities or describing Him as supreme. stotram comes from the word Sthuthi and Sthuthi means praise. Some stotram are also called as Sthavas. stotram could be broadly translated as “Praise of God”.

Stotra (stotram) can be broadly classified according the time period as those originating during period of Vedas, period of the Puranas  and post Purana Stotra or according to the style in which they are written. Stotra are useful for cutting away at karma. They are not bound by the rules that Shruti (Stotra) such as the Vedas are bound by, so therefore, they are accessible by the everyday householder.
