Gopal Vishanti Stotram (गोपाल विशंति स्तोत्रम्) : The birthday of our Lord Krishna (Sri Jayanthi) is on Simha Sraavana month (Aavani). When Ashtami of Krishna Paksham is united with the constellation Rohini, our Lord was born. Swami Desikan composed 20 verses in praise of him and prayed that he should be blessed with thoughts exclusively about HIM during his final moments (Antima Smriti) on this earth.

Swami composed these twenty verses, when he was overcome by the beauty of the idol. The Sanskrit name for twenty is Vinshati and hence these twenty verses in praise of Sri Gopala are celebrated as Sri Gopala Vinshati. For more than 700 years, these verses have been sung prior to Sri Vaishnav Araadhana (Group partaking of food presented to the Lord earlier) to seek the Lord’s blessings and during the occasion of marriages to confer the blessings of the Lord on the bride and the bridegroom.

Swami Desikan paints a word picture of the incomparable beauty of Sri Gopala, describes the structure of Gopal Vishanti Stotram and affectionately recalls the many mischievous deeds performed by Bal Gopala in Gokul and Brindavan to the utter delight of the humans and the celestial beings.

Gopal Vishanti Stotram must have been very dear to Swami Desikan as indicated by his inclusion of the twelfth verse of this Gopal Vishanti Stotram in his esoteric master piece known as Sankalpa Suryodhayam. There, he depicts Narada descending from heaven singing joyously the verse during his journey to meet Purushan and initiate him into the Maha Mantra of the Lord.

When Swamy Desikan was in Kanchipuram, a snake charmer challenged him to prove his capability. He then let loose a deadly serpent on him. Swamy Desikan then chanted the Garuda Mantra for God’s grace. Garuda emerged immediately from the sky and whisked away the serpent.

The snake-charmer realized his foolishness and his underestimation of swami and surrendered firstly before Swami Desikan. He pleaded then to secure the snake as he is completely depending only on that snake for his livelihood. Swami Desikan with his merciful nature thus composed Garuda Dhandakam and pleaded for its survival. Garuda came back from the sky with living snake and flew after dropping it.

श्रीमान् वेंकटनाथार्यः कवितार्किककेसरी ।

वेदान्ताचार्यवर्यो मे सन्निधत्तां सदा हृदि ॥

वन्दे वृन्दावनचरं वलव्वीजनवल्लभम् ।

जयन्तीसम्भवं धाम वैजयन्तीविभूषणम् ॥ १॥

वाचं निजाङ्करसिकां प्रसमीक्षमाणो

वक्त्रारविन्दविनिवेशितपांचजन्यः ।

वर्णः त्रिकोणरूचिरे वरपुण्डरीके

बद्धासनो जयति वल्लवचक्रवर्ती ॥ २॥

आम्नायगन्धरुदितस्फुरिताधरोष्ठम्

आस्राविलेक्षणमनुक्षणमन्दहासम् ।

गोपालडिम्भवपुषं कुहना जनन्याः

प्राणस्तनन्धयमवैमि परं पुमांसम् ॥ ३॥

आविर्भवत्वनिभृताभरणं पुरस्तात्

आकुंचितैकचरण निभृहितान्यपादम् ।

दध्नानिबद्धमुखरेण निबद्धतालं

नाथस्य नन्दभवने नवनीतनाट्यम् ॥ ४॥

कुन्दप्रसूनविशदैर्दशनैश्चर्तुभिः

संदश्य मातुरनिशं कुचचूचुकाग्रम् ।

नन्दस्य वक्त्रमवलोकयतो मुरारेर्-

मन्दस्थितं मममनीषितमातनोतु ॥ ५॥

हर्तुं कुम्भे विनिहितकरः स्वादु हैयङ्गवीनं

दृष्ट्वा दामग्रहणचटुलां मातरं जातरोषाम् ।

पायादीषत्प्रचलितपदौ नापगच्छन्न तिष्ठन्

मिथ्यागोपः सपदि नयने मीलयन् विश्वगोप्ता ॥ ६॥

व्रजयोषिदपाङ्ग वेधनीयं

मथुराभाग्यमनन्यभोग्यमीडे ।

वसुदेववधू स्तनन्धयं तद्-

किमपि ब्रह्म किशोरभावदृश्यम् ॥ ८॥

परिवर्तितकन्धरं भयेन

स्मितफुल्लाधरपल्लवं स्मरामि ।

विटपित्वनिरासकं कयोश्चिद्-

विपुलोलूखलकर्षकं कुमारम् ॥ ९॥

निकटेषु निशामयामि नित्यं

निगमान्तैरधुनाऽपि मृग्यमाणम् ।

यमलार्जुनदृष्टबालकेलिं

यमुनासाक्षिकयौवनं युवानम् ॥ १०॥

पदवीमदवीयसीं विमुक्ते-

रटवीं सम्पदम्बु वाहयन्तीम् ।

अरूणाधरसाभिलाषवंशां

करूणां कारणमानुषीं भजामि ॥ ११॥

अनिमेषनिवेष्णीयमक्ष्णो-

रजहद्यौवनमाविरस्तु चित्ते ।

कलहायितकुन्तलं कलापैः

करूणोन्मादकविग्रहं महो मे ॥ १२॥

अनुयायिमनोज्ञवंशनालै-

रवतु स्पर्शितवल्लवीविमोहैः ।

अनघस्मितशीतलैरसौ माम्

अनुकम्पासरिदम्बुजैरपाङ्गैः ॥ १३॥

अधराहितचारूवंशनाला

मकुटालम्बिमयूरपिञ्च्छमालाः ।

हरिनीलशिलाविभङ्गनीलाः

प्रतिभाः सन्तु ममान्तिमप्रयाणे ॥ १४॥

अखिलानवलोकयामि कालान्

महिलादीनभुजान्तरस्यूनः ।

अभिलाषपदं व्रजाङ्गनानाम्

अभिलाक्रमदूरमाभिरूप्यम् ॥ १५॥

महसे महिताय मौलिना

विनतेनाञ्जलिमञ्जनत्विषे ।

कलयामि विमुग्धवल्लवी-

वलयाभाषितमञ्जुवेणवे ॥ १६॥

जयतु ललितवृत्तिं शिक्षितो वल्लवीनां

शिथिलवलयशिञ्जाशीतलैर्हस्ततालैः ।

अखिलभुवनरक्षागोपवेशस्य विष्णो-

रधरमणिसुधायामंशवान् वंशनालः ॥ १७॥

चित्राकल्पः श्रवसि कलयल्लाङ्गलीकर्णपूरं

बर्होत्तंसस्फुरितचिकुरो बन्धुजीवं दधानः ।

गुंजाबद्धामुरसि ललितां धारयन् हारयष्टिं

गोपस्त्रीणां जयति कितवः कोऽपि कौमारहारी ॥ १८॥

लीलायष्टिं करकिसलये दक्षिणे न्यस्त धन्या-

मंसे देव्याः पुलकरुचिरे सन्निविष्टान्यबाहुः ।

मेघश्यामो जयति ललितो मेखलादत्तवेणु-

र्गुञ्जापीडस्फुरितचिकुरो गोपकन्याभुजङ्गः ॥ १९॥

प्रत्यालीढस्थितिंअधिगतां प्राप्तगाढाङ्कपालीं

पश्चादीषन्मिलितनयनां प्रेयसीं प्रेक्षमाणः ।

भस्त्रायन्त्रप्रणिहितकरो भक्तजीवातुरव्याद्

वारिक्रीडानिबिडवसनो वल्लवीवल्लभो नः ॥ २०॥

वासो हृत्वा दिनकरसुतासन्निधौ वल्लवीनां

लीलास्मेरो जयति ललितामास्थितः कुन्दशाखाम् ।

सव्रीडाभिस्तदनु वसने ताभिरभ्यर्थ्यमाने

कामी कश्चित्करकमलयोरञ्जलिं याचमानः ॥ २१॥

इत्यनन्यमनसा विनिर्मितां

वेंकटेशकविना स्तुतिं पठन् ।

दिव्यवेणुरसिकं समीक्षते

दैवतं किमपि यौवतप्रियम् ॥ २२॥
