It was found that more than 80 different plant species and their products are required to perform religious and cultural festivals in the study area. The nature of species varies from annual herbs, climber, palm trees, shrub to big sized trees and their parts(Tantra Oshadhi). These are purely wild to domesticate. With increasing development different kinds of flowers are used than were traditional used. However, there are some plants products for which there is no substitute such as Dsemotachya bipinnata and bamboos used to transport dead body up to the cremate places. The most commonly used part in various ceremonies is leaf and flowers. Other parts used are branches, stems, fruits, bark and roots. These part(s) of individual plants are either used in individual basis or are used to produce composite products.

Trees being nature’s major processors of solar energy which is vital for our existence, and yielding flowers, fruit, wood or medicine, have been worshipped by the Hindus as a matter of gratitude. Manu believed that they were conscious like humans and felt pleasure and pain.

Indian sages and seers eulogized, Peepal (Ficus religiosa), gular (Ficus glomerata), Neem (Azadirachta Indica), bel (Aegle marmelos, banyan (Ficus bengalensis), Asoka (Sereca Indica), Amla (Phyllanthus emblica), Arjuna (Terminalia Arjuna) and many other trees which acquired social and religious sanctity with the passage of time.

Bel, Rudraksha (seeds of Elaeocarpas) and ber (Zizyphus jujube) are considered dear to Lord Siva, sala (Shorea Robusta) and Peepal to Lord Vishnu; Kadamb (Anthocephalus cadamba) to Lord Krishna; mango (Mangifera Indica) to Lord Hanuman, Asoka to Kamdev; silk cotton (Bombax malabaricum) to the goddess Lakshmi; and coconut or sriphala (Cocas nucifera) to Varun or the lord of waters, and to many other gods and goddesses.

Ayurveda evolved from the ancient wisdom of healers, prophets & Rishi that lived deep in the Himalayas. Astrology and botany are complementary to nature. Trees and vegetation have the ability to change the condition of planets in human life. There are several remedies in Vedic astrology to pacify the ill-effects of afflicted planets placed in a Kundali(Tantra Oshadhi). Some of them include, planting a banyan tree on a highway gives relief from markeyesha Saturn and longevity, or if Jupiter is weak or forms Alpayu yoga in association with any other planet then the native should plant Peepal tree to get good results. Similarly, medicinal plants/herbs are also used in astrology to get relief from inauspicious results of malefic planets.

Each plant is associated with some or the other planet that are applied on the native’s body after performing a special Yajna. These Ayurvedic herbs are used to calm down the negative effects of planets and do destroy the defects of Vastu as well.

According to astrologers, Yajna is the most important ceremony to calm the planets and attain their auspicious results. Scholars have identified the plants and herbs used in Yajna in various categories according to their relation with the planets. Wood used in the Yajna is known as Idham. Not every wood can be used for this ceremony. As per the rituals in Vayu Purana, wood from teak, Ficus, banyan, Peepal, fig, sandalwood, cedar etc is considered beneficial for Yajna(Tantra Oshadhi). Dayanand Saraswati has considered the wood of sandalwood. Bastard teak and mango tree are most beneficial for performing Yajna.

To get relief from the malefic effects of the planets or to reduce the ominous effects the herbal bath is a remedy as well. In our scripture it is mentioned that by crushing some herbs in Mortar and Pistil and to keep those soaked in bathing water give relief to the patients.

The planets exert their effect on plants and their medicinal properties too. Despite the uses of all pathological and sonographical tests, often it becomes difficult for the medical practitioner to diagnose disease correctly and such patients are used as experimental, tools. Disease diagnosis is infallible in astrology(Tantra Oshadhi). Disease diagnosis requires remedial measures for early recovery or eradication of ailment. Shushruta and Charaka have given various good Muhurtas for treatment and administration of medicines in Ayurvedic treatises such a Charaka Samhita. Shushruta Samhita, Nighantu, Rajnighantu etc. It has clearly been mentioned in these treatises mat the medicinal efficacy of plants is best exhibited when they are collected during die period of a particular Nakshatra. Preparation of medicine should also be done during the period of that Nakshatra. The medicine so prepared, if used by the patient on the day of the Nakshatra, will lead to early recovery. It therefore warrants an investigation to find out if there is any change in the chemical composition of the ingredients when plants are collected and processed for medicine in particular Nakshatra.

Regarding the herbs and plants there are many things to know, which is not possible to explain. The trees provide us oxygen and keep us healthy and save and protect us from many diseases(Tantra Oshadhi). The maximum we take care of plants, we will be benefitted maximum. It is a boon to our life.
