Wormwood Herb/अफसंतीन: Wormwood Herb is used for various digestion problems such as loss of appetite, upset stomach, gall bladder disease, and intestinal spasms. Wormwood is also used to treat fever, liver disease, depression, muscle pain, memory loss and worm infections; to increase sexual desire; as a tonic; and to stimulate sweating. Wormwood is used for Crohn’s disease and a kidney disorder called Iga nephropathy.
Although its name is commonly thought to come from this herb’s ability to kill intestinal parasites, “Wormwood” has been speculated to come from the Anglo Saxon word “Wermode”, meaning “mind preserver”.
Wormwood Herb has been extensively used to kill worms and parasites and of course this is how it got its name. Wormwood Herb also has a rich traditional use as a tonic for people with weakened digestion or low energy. It is a particularly potent liver tonic and has been widely used in cleansing programs since antiquity. Culpeper considered Wormwood Herb one of the finest remedies for poor liver function, gastro-intestinal pain & indigestion. He also thought it especially excellent for gout & gravel (kidney stones).
In the 16th century it was thought to counteract the poisonous effects of hemlock and toadstools. If ever bitten by a sea-dragon, Wormwood Herb was a source of comfort to the victim!
In herbal medicine the leaves of Wormwood are used, which is a tough and long-lived plant that has an intense (actually rather pleasant) odour and a truly unforgettable taste. The whole Wormwood plant has an unusual grey-white colour and is covered with a soft downy kind of fur.
Artemisia absinthium is a herbaceous perennial plant with fibrous roots. The stems are straight, growing to 0.8–1.2 metres (2 ft 7 in–3 ft 11 in) (sometimes even over 1.5 m, but rarely) tall, grooved, branched, and silvery-green. The leaves are spirally arranged, greenish-grey above and white below, covered with silky silvery-white trichomes, and bearing minute oil-producing glands; the basal leaves are up to 25 cm long, bipinnate to tripinnate with long petioles, with the cauline leaves (those on the stem) smaller, 5–10 cm long, less divided, and with short petioles; the uppermost leaves can be both simple and sessile (without a petiole).
Wormwood Herb looks weird, it tastes weird and its name could hardly be less appealing but this is a plant with a tremendous medical history and one that is still revered in herbal traditions today.
