चिरकाल से हमारी यह इच्छा थी, कि, ज्योतिष का ऐसा ग्रन्थ निर्माण किया जाय जिससे प्राय: आवश्यक अभी विषयों का संग्रह हो। यह बात उचित है कि समस्त कार्यो का समय के ऊपर निर्भर है। यदि ईश्वर अनुकूल हो तो समयानुसार बड़े से बड़े कार्य भी एक अल्प व्यक्ति से सिद्ध हो जाते है।
दैवी अनुकूलता से “बृहदवकहडाचक्र” को निर्माण कर इसमें बिलकुल आवश्यक विषयों का ही समावेश किया गया है। मानो कि आपने ज्योतिषविद्या के बड़े बड़े ग्रन्थ देखे होंगे परन्तु रत्नाकर में रत्न यंत्र फैले रहते है इसी प्रकार उन बृहत्कार्य ग्रन्थों में उपयोगी विषय भी एकत्र नहीं है। इस कारण हमने उपयुक्त सब विषयों को एकत्रित कर पाठकों को लाभ पहुँचने की चेष्टा की है।
हमे आशा कहाँ थी कि, इस लघु ग्रन्थ का विद्वान् व्यक्ति गण कुछ भी आदर करेंगे, परन्तु सज्जन पण्डित महाशयों ने इसका इतना आदर किया है कि हाथों हाथ इसकी सहस्त्रों प्रतियाँ बिक गई और एकही वर्ष में दूसरा संस्करण छपने का अवसर प्राप्त हुआ। खेद है कि उस दिव्तीयवृति में हम कुछ भी उपयोगी परिवर्तन न कर सके। परन्तु उदार पाठकों के अनुग्रह से जब तृतीयावृति का सुअवसर प्राप्त हुआ तब हमने कितने ही विषय और बढ़ा दिये।
