They possessed abilities such as entering other bodies, stopping water and fire, moving freely underwater, traveling through the sky, and visiting various realms of the universe. Additionally, they could achieve the eight siddhis: Anima, Laghima, Mahima, Prapti, Prakamy, Ishitwa, Vashitwa, and Kamavasayitwa.

The six actions (Shat karmas) such as Maran (killing), Mohan (enchantment), Vashikaran (enslavement), Stambhan (freezing), Uchchatan (getting rid of), and Shantih (peace)—as well as many seemingly supernatural tasks like affecting or neutralizing weapons against enemies—were possible through this Mantra Shastra. Even today, if this science is mastered through practice, nothing is impossible. There is now neither the patience in anyone nor are the methods of this science easily accessible.

The present ‘Mantra Maharṇav’ attempts to fill this gap. As its name suggests, it has corresponding qualities. It includes mantras for all major deities, demons, yakshas, Gandharvas, kinnaras, yoginis, apsaras, and celestial maidens. Following that, there is a comprehensive presentation of mantras. भारतीय ऋषि मुनि न केवल देवताओं पर विजय प्राप्त करने में सफल होता था, वरन् देवों को वशीभूत करके उनसे अपना प्रयोजन भी सिद्ध कर लेता था৷ मन्त्रशास्त के प्रभाव से ही अन्यान्य असुर और राक्षस देवों को पराजित करने में समर्थ हुये৷ परकायप्रवेश, जल तथा अग्नि का स्तम्भन, जल के भीतर अबाध गति, आकाशगमन, ब्राह्माण्ड के विभिन्न लोकों की यात्रा करने की क्षमता भी उनमे था৷ इसके अलावा अणिमा, लघिमा, महिमा, प्राप्ति, प्राकाम्य, इशित्व, वशित्व तथा कामावसायित्व आदि अष्टसिद्धियाँ भी ये संभव कर लेते थे৷ इसके अतिरिक्त मारण, मोहन, वशीकरण. स्तम्भन, उच्चाटन, शान्ति आदि षट्कर्म, शत्रुओं पर विजय अस्त्र शस्त्रों को प्रभाव या निष्प्रभावी बनाना, इत्यादि अनेक अलौकिक प्रतीत होनेवाले कार्य इस मन्त्रशास्त्र द्वारा ही सम्भव होते थे৷

आज भी यदि साधना द्वारा इस शास्त्र को सिद्ध कर लिया जाय तो कुछ भी असम्भव नहीं है৷ परन्तु अब न तो किसी में इतना धैर्य है और न इस शास्त्र की विधियाँ कहीं एक सुलभ हैं৷ प्रस्तुत ‘मन्त्र महार्णव’ में इस कमी को पूरा करने का प्रयास किया गया है৷ जैसा इसका नाम है वैसा ही इसका गुण है৷ इसमें सभी प्रमुख देवताओं, दैत्यों, यक्ष, गन्धर्वो, किन्नरों, योगिनियों, अप्सराओं, देवकन्याओं के मंत्र दिया गया है৷ इसके उपरांत, नागकन्याओं, राक्षसों और प्रेतादिकों से सम्बद्ध मन्त्र तथा उनके अनुष्ठान के सम्पूर्ण विधान को विधिवत और क्रमानुसार प्रस्तुत किया गया है৷
