इस कठोपनिषद् पर अनेकानेक भाष्य लिखे जा चुके है परन्तु उन्हें पढ़कर ऐसा आभास नहीं होता कि जिज्ञासुओं की समस्त जिज्ञासाएं शांत कर पाने में वे पूर्णतया समर्थ नहीं है। सम्भवत: उन लेखक विद्वानों के मन में यह धारणा रही हो कि अमुक बात तो जिज्ञासुओं को पहले से ही ज्ञात होगी अत: पुन: उसकी व्याख्या करना पिष्टपेषण ही होगा। और इसी कारण वह जिज्ञासा जिज्ञासा ही रह गई। यथा उपनिषदों में पुन: पुन: इस बात पर बाल दिया गया है कि अमृतत्व प्राप्ति ज्ञान से होती है ‘विद्यया विन्दतेऽमृतम’, वह ब्रह्म इन्द्रियों के द्वारा अप्राप्य है इत्यादि परन्तु ‘अमृतत्व प्राप्त करने का क्या अभिप्राय है।

कब यह कहा जा सकता है कि अब यह व्यक्ति ज्ञानी हो गया, ज्ञान किसे कहते है। ब्रह्मप्राप्ति इन्द्रियों के द्वारा क्यों नहीं हो सकती, ज्ञान प्राप्ति होने पर ह्रदय की ग्रन्थियां किस प्रकार खुल जाती है, ये सब प्रश्न अनुत्तरित ही रह जाते है। यदि उत्तर दिया भी गया है तो अप्रत्यक्ष रूप से जो साधारण मनुष्यों की समझ से परे है। जब तक इन शंकाओं का समाधान नहीं होता तब तक जिज्ञासु ब्रह्म रूपी मंजिल तक कैसे पहुँच पाएंगे। इन सब प्रश्नों के उत्तर स्पष्ट रूप से अत्यंत सरल और रोचक भाषा में इस पुस्तक में दिए गये है।
