The state of non-attachment to worldly objects is liberation. When pleasure arises from earthly objects, it is the world.

When the mind becomes indifferent to worldly objects, then it is liberation. Living in the world, eating and drinking, and performing actions is not bondage; becoming unattached to these is liberation. This is the essence of the science of liberation. Becoming a renunciant, immersing oneself in meditation (dhuni), cursing the world, tormenting the body, fasting, or eating neem chutney with food cannot bring about non-attachment to worldly objects. However, none of these have any relation to liberation.

अष्टावक्र कहते हैं कि मोक्ष कोई वस्तु नहीं है जिसे प्राप्त किया जाये, न कोई स्थान है जहाँ पहुँचा जाये, न कोई भोग है जिसे भोगा जा सके, न रस है, न इसकी कोई साधना है, न सिद्धि है, न ये स्वर्ग में है, न सिद्धशिला पर। विषयों में विरसता ही मोक्ष है। विषयों में रस आता है तो संसार है। जब मन विषयों से विरस हो जाता है तब मुक्ति है।

संसार में रहना, खाना-पीना व कर्म करना बन्ध नहीं है; इसमें अनासक्त हो जाना ही मुक्ति है। इतना ही मोक्ष विज्ञान का सार है। संन्यासी बनने से, धूनी रमाने से, संसार को गालियाँ देने से, शरीर को सताने से, उपवास करने से, भोजन के साथ नीम की चटनी खाने से विषयों के प्रति विरसता नहीं आ सकती । इन सबका मोक्ष से कोई सम्बन्ध नहीं है ।
