आगम और तन्त्र दोनों पर्यायवाची पद माने गये है, आगम अनादि परम्परा प्राप्त माना गया है। जैसा कि उल्लेख है कि भगवान शिव ने अपने पांच मुखों- सद्योजात, वामदेव, अघोर, तत्पुरुष और ईशान द्वारा भगवती पराम्बा पार्वती को तंत्रों का उपदेश दिया तथा ये तन्त्र श्रीमन्नारायण भगवान वासुदेव को भी मान्य हुए और तदनुसार ही पूर्व, दक्षिण, पश्चिम, उत्तर और ऊर्ध्व ये पांच आम्नाय तंत्रों में प्रचलित हुए। कलियुग में आगम मार्ग को अपनाए बिना सिद्धि नहीं प्राप्त हो सकती, साथ ही, आगम सार्ववार्णिक है जबकि निगम त्रैवर्णिक।
उल्लेख है कि वैदिक आचार सत्ययुग, स्मृत्युपदिष्ट आचार त्रेतायुग, तथा पौराणिक आचार द्वापरयुग तथा आगमोक्त्य आचार कलियुग में मान्य है। जैसा कि कहा गया है – यदि शब्द व्युत्पत्ति पर विचार करें तो आगम शब्द ‘आ’ उपसर्गपूर्वक गति अर्थवाले गम धातु से बनता है। ‘आ’ उपसर्ग का अर्थ चारों तरफ यानि सर्वत्र व्यापक रूप से होता है। तात्पर्य यह हुआ समग्र ब्रह्माण्ड में व्यापकता प्रदान करने वाला या व्यापक गति प्रदान करने वाला ज्ञान ही आगम है। जैसा कि शास्त्रों में आया है निश्चित रूप से तत्व की ओर ले जाने वाला निगम तथा वचन से आविर्भूत तत्वार्थ विशेष का संवेदी आगम होता है। तत्व, मन्त्र, देवता, साधनाविधि, फल आदि सभी का वर्णन जिसमें हो तथा जो साधक की रक्षा भी करें वह शास्त्र या विद्या अथवा ज्ञान तन्त्र कहलाता है। यह शब्द विस्तार अर्थवाले तन धातु से औणादिक ‘ष्ट्रन’ प्रत्यय करने पर बनता है। तंत्रों के अनेक भेद है मुख्यत: 64 माने गये है। उनमें भी शैव, शाक्त फिर वैष्णव, बौद्ध और जैन भेद से बहुसंख्यक हो जाते है। माना यह गया है कि सभी का आविष्कार भगवान शिव के द्वारा ही हुआ है।
