मन्त्र शास्त्र अपने में एक अगाध व सीमामुक्त साहित्य है। इस साहित्य का जितना भी वर्णन किया जाए उतना ही थोडा है। मन्त्र शब्द का अर्थ असीमित है। वैदिक ऋचाओं के प्रत्यके छन्द भी मन्त्र कहे जाते है तथा देवी देवताओं की स्तुतियों व यज्ञ हवन के निमित्त निश्चित किये गये शब्द समूहों को भी मन्त्र कहा जाता है। तन्त्र शास्त्र में मन्त्र का भिन्न अर्थ है। तन्त्र शास्त्र के अनुसार मन्त्र उसे कहते है – जो शब्द पद या पद समूह जिस जिस देवता या शक्ति को प्रकट करता है वह उस देवता या शक्ति का मन्त्र कहा जाता है। दूसरे रूप में हम मन्त्र की परिभाषा इस प्रकार भी कह सकते है कि निश्चित वर्ण समूह द्वारा उच्चारित ध्वनि को मन्त्र कहते है। जिसे कि हम उच्चारण करते है अथवा उन वर्ण समूहों से निर्मित वाक्य जो कि अपना विशेष प्रभाव दिखाते है उन्हें मन्त्र कहते है। -Mantra Tantra-Totke Book
