ज्योतिष शास्त्र में भविष्य कथन की कई प्रणालियाँ है। जैसे अंकशास्त्र, हस्तसामुद्रिक, मुखसामुद्रिक, तिल देखकर भविष्य बताना, रमल विद्या, टैरो कार्ड आदि। किन्तु इन सब में ‘कुण्डली शास्त्र’ अर्थात कुण्डली बनाकर भविष्य बताना सबसे प्राचीन प्रणाली है। इस प्रणाली को हजारों सालों की परंपरा है। हजारों सालों पहले हमारे हिन्दू ऋषियों ने इस प्रणाली का प्रयोग शुरु किया और आसमान में स्थित ग्रहों का लगातार निरीक्षण करते हुए इस प्रणाली में कई बदलाव भी किये। इस तरह सालों से निरीक्षण और बदलाव होते होते कुण्डली शास्त्र और भी उपयुक्त सिद्ध प्रमाणित होने लगा। भारतीय ज्योतिष शास्त्र मूलत: ‘नक्षत्राधिष्ठित’ था। ग्रीक लोगों ने ‘राशि’ की संकल्पना ज्योतिष शास्त्र में लाई और उनकी देखादेखी में हम भी नक्षत्रों को कम आंकने लगे। रिश्ता तय करना या मुहूर्त निकालने के लिए ही नक्षत्रों को देखा जाने लगा, क्योंकि इन दोनों ही बातों का अविष्कार मूलत: हमारे ज्योतिर्विदों ने ही किया था। किन्तु इसके अलावा काफी बातों के बारे में जानते समय नक्षत्रों को नजरअंदाज किया जाने लगा।
