Among these, five elements—earth, sky, air, fire, and water—are known as the Panchatattva (five elements). According to Vedic astrology, the origin of these elements is due to the soul and Brahman. The elements that create the universe, humans, the earth, and living beings are Pancha tattva.
These five elements have an impact on the lives of creatures and beings residing on Earth. When these five elements come together, the Pancha Tattva creates. According to Vedic scriptures, if there is a deficiency of one element in the body, the existence of the other elements is also now extinct. The birth of a soul in the human womb requires the Pancha tattva. The Pancha Tattva is extremely important for living a disease-free and long life. The oldest available literature in India is Vedic literature.
During the Vedic period, Indians performed Yajnas (sacrificial rituals). To obtain the specific fruits of these Yajnas, it was essential to perform them at the appointed times; therefore, since the Vedic period, Indians began to gain knowledge of time based on the positions of the sun and moon through the Vedas. According to the report of the Panchang Samarasamiti, the Aryans of the Rigveda period had acquired knowledge of the lunar-solar calendar system.

मनुष्य की योनि में एक आत्मा को जन्म लेने के लिए पंचतत्व की आवश्यकता होती है৷ जीवन में निरोगी और दीर्घायु रहने के लिए पंचतत्व अत्यधिक महत्वपूर्ण है৷ भारत का प्राचीनतम उपलब्ध साहित्य वैदिक साहित्य है৷ वैदिककाल के भारतीय यज्ञ किया करते थे৷ यज्ञों के विशिष्ट फल प्राप्त करने के लिये उन्हें निर्धारित समय पर करना आवश्यक था इसलिए वैदिककाल से ही भारतीयों ने वेधों द्वारा सूर्य और चंद्रमा की स्थितियों से काल का ज्ञान प्राप्त करना शुरू किया৷ पंचांग सुधारसमिति की रिपोर्ट में दिए गए विवरण के अनुसार ऋग्वेद काल के आर्यों ने चांद्र-सौर वर्षगणना पद्धति का ज्ञान प्राप्त कर लिया था৷
