Detachment is of three types. The first is mild detachment, the second is intense detachment, and the third is the most intense detachment. The detachment that occurs when one loses a spouse, child, or any of the like is mild. The desire to renounce worldly pleasures without experiencing any suffering is an intense detachment. When the desire to renounce arises even in the presence of all worldly possessions, such as kingdoms, and relationships like spouses and children, it is the most intense detachment.

संसार में ऐसा कौन विद्वान या तपस्वी है जो श्री स्वामी दत्तात्रेय का नाम न जानता हो? उनके त्याग और वैराग्य की कथाओं से बहुत कम लोग परिचित हैं৷ इस ग्रंथ में सर्वप्रथम उनके जीवन की कथा प्रस्तुत की गई है, तत्पश्चात स्वामी दत्तात्रेय द्वारा रचित “अवधूत गीता” के प्रत्येक शब्द का अर्थ बताया गया है, तत्पश्चात उसकी व्याख्या भी की गई है৷ इस संसार में जन्म-मरण के बंधन से मुक्त होने के लिए वैराग्य ही पूर्ण मोक्ष प्राप्ति का प्रमुख साधन है৷ जब तक व्यक्ति वैराग्य प्राप्त नहीं कर लेता, तब तक उसका मन सांसारिक सुखों से विमुख नहीं होता৷ सुखों से मन को हटाए बिना मोक्ष का कोई भी साधन सफल नहीं होता৷
आज तक जितने भी मुक्त संत हुए हैं, उन्होंने वैराग्य के माध्यम से ही मोक्ष प्राप्त किया है৷ वैराग्य तीन प्रकार का होता है: पहला सौम्य वैराग्य, दूसरा तीव्र वैराग्य और तीसरा सबसे तीव्र वैराग्य৷ जीवनसाथी, संतान या किसी ऐसे ही किसी को खो देने पर होने वाला वैराग्य सौम्य वैराग्य कहलाता है৷ बिना किसी कष्ट का अनुभव किए सांसारिक सुखों को त्यागने की इच्छा को तीव्र वैराग्य कहते हैं৷ जब सभी सांसारिक संपत्ति, जैसे राज्य, और पति-पत्नी और बच्चों जैसे रिश्तों की मौजूदगी में भी त्याग की इच्छा पैदा होती है, तो इसे सबसे तीव्र वैराग्य कहते हैं৷
