रत्नों के विषय में आदि काल से ही मानव मन में जिज्ञासा रही है। रत्नों की चमक, उनके आकर्षण और रूप पर मुग्ध होकर मनुष ने उन्हें अपने शरीर पर सजाना शुरू किया। इस प्रकार धीरे-धीरे मनुष्य ने रत्नों की उपयोगिता के विषय में जाना। अपने अनुसंधानों के द्वारा मनुष्य ने यह भी जाना कि एक विशेष चयन विधि के द्वारा अगर रत्नों को धारण किया जाए तो ये लाभकारी सिद्ध हो सकते हैं। साथ ही मनुष्य ने अपने दीर्घकालीन अनुभव के आधार पर यह भी जाना कि किस परिस्थिति में किस रंग का रत्न धारण करने से वह किस रूप में लाभकारी हो सकता है?
आचार्य वराहमिहिर के अनुसार बलि दैत्य और दधीचि की हडिड्यों से रत्नों की उत्पत्ति हुई है। जब दैत्य की अस्थियाँ इधर-उधर गिरीं तो वे जहाँ गिरीं उस प्रदेश में हीरे उत्पन्न हुए। दंत पंक्तियाँ मोतियों के रूप में परिवर्तित हो गयीं। रुद्राक्ष को शिव का प्रत्यक्ष अंश माना गया है, जिसकी महिमा और चमत्कारों से हम सभी भली-भांति अवगत हैं। पुराणों के अनुसार ऐसा कहा गया है कि ये रुद्राक्ष शिव के आंसुओं से बने हैं। रुद्राक्ष विभिन्न तरह के होते हैं और इसी के आधार पर इनक महत्व और उपयोगिता भी भिन्न-भिन्न होती है। लेकिन रुद्राक्ष धारण करने के कुछ नियम हैं। रुद्राक्ष से संबंधित एक महत्वपूर्ण नियम के अनुसार आप जिस भी माला से जाप करते हैं उस माला को कदापि धारण ना करें और जिस माला को धारण करते हैं उसे कभी भी जाप के प्रयोग में ना लाएं।
