Because people observe it on the Tritiya tithi, this Vrat is commonly known as ‘Teej’ among women. Unmarried girls perform this Vrat with the hope of finding a desired husband, while married women do it to protect their marital happiness and to wish for the well-being of their husbands.

There is an ancient belief that women who perform this Vrat live a life similar to that of Mother Parvati and attain the abode of Shiva. The person performing the Vrat should wake up before sunrise and remember Lord Shankar. After completing their daily rituals, they should go to the Shiva temple. Where they will perform the worship and either read or listen to sacred texts.

If possible, they should prepare a beautiful mandap adorned with garlands of flowers. Such as banana leaves, for the worship of Shiv and Parvati. Women desiring marital bliss should create an idol of sand representing Shankar and Parvati. Thereafter, install it in this mandap for worship. During the worship, they can recite any hymns related to Shiv-Parvati or the Shiva Chalisa.

हरतालिका तीज का यह प्रसिद्ध व्रत भादों मास के शुक्लपक्ष में तृतीया को किया जाता है৷ तृतीया तिथि को किए जाने के कारण स्त्रियों में यह व्रत अधिकतर ‘तीजों’ नाम से जाना जाता है৷ कुँवारी लड़कियों में यह व्रत इच्छितवर पाने की आशा से तथा विवाहित स्त्रियाँ सुहाग की रक्षा और पतिसुख की कामना करके करती हैं৷ प्राचीनकाल से चली आ रही मान्यता है कि इस व्रत को करने वाली स्त्रियाँ माता पार्वती के समान सुखपूर्वक जीवनयापन करके शिवलोक को प्राप्त होती हैं৷

व्रत करने वाला व्यक्ति सूर्योदय के पहले उठे और भगवान शंकरजी का स्मरण करे৷ फिर नित्यकर्मों से निवृत्त होकर शिवालय में जाएँ, जहाँ पूजन करना हो और पढ़नी अथवा सुननी हो৷ यदि हो सके तो शिव मन्दिर में शिव-पार्वती पूजन के लिए केले के बन्दनवार इत्यादि अनेक पुष्पमालाओं से सुसज्जित एक सुन्दर मण्डप तैयार कर लें৷ सुहाग चाहने वाली स्त्रियों को शंकर-पार्वती की बालू (रेत) की प्रतिमा बनाकर उसे इस मण्डप में स्थापित कर पूजा करनी चाहिए৷ पूजा में शिव-पार्वती से सम्बन्धित कोई भी स्तोत्र अथवा शिव चालीसा का पाठ कर सकते हैं৷
