The term Tripindi means providing three pandas for the peace of the departed soul, which signifies that the Tripindi shradh ceremony people perform for the ancestors’ purpose.

In Tripindi shradh, the peace of three types of spirits—sattvic, rajasic, and tamasic people addressed. Moreover, it is a significant endeavor for appeasing spirits residing in the celestial realm, the interstellar realm, and the earthly realm. Although, when a person dies prematurely due to suicide, accidents, fire, water, weapons, or killed by another, it is a say that the soul experiences untimely death.

Thereafter, resulting in the departed soul being condemned to the ghostly existence, causing distress to others. To pacify this, Tripindi shradh one should perform. If the soul does not receive pindadaan (offerings) or water from its descendants, it suffers from terrible hunger and thirst. Distressed ancestors, lacking food, water, and clothing, endure suffering due to hunger, thirst, and harsh weather. Ultimately, they become angry with their descendants. Thereafter, compelled by their grievances, begin to draw the blood of their relatives who neglected to perform shradh for them.

त्रिपिण्डी, तीन पिण्ड वाला श्राद्ध अथवा ऐसा श्राद्ध जिसमें तीन पिण्ड दान दिए जाते है। त्रिपिण्डी शब्द का अर्थ मृतात्मा की शान्ति के लिए तीन पिण्ड प्रदान करना, जिससे त्रिपिण्डी श्राद्ध कर्म का बोध अथवा यह कह सकते हैं कि पितरों के उद्देश्य से होता है।

त्रिपिण्डी श्राद्ध में सात्त्विक, राजस तथा तामस तीन प्रकार के प्रेतों की शान्ति होती है साथ ही द्युलोक, अन्तरिक्षलोक तथा भूलोक में निवास करने वाले प्रेतों की शान्ति का यह एक महान उपक्रम है। व्यक्ति आत्महत्या, दुर्घटना, अग्नि, जल, शस्त्रादि से अथवा किसी के द्वारा वध किए जाने पर उस व्यक्ति की अकाल मृत्यु ऐसा कहा जाता है और अकाल मृत्यु में निधनगत जीवात्मा को प्रेत योनि प्राप्त होती है, जोकि लोगों को पीड़ित करती है। जिसकी शान्ति के लिए त्रिपिण्डी श्राद्ध करना चाहिए यदि आत्मा को पिण्डदान या जल अपनी संततियों के द्वारा प्राप्त न हुआ तो वे भयानक भूख एवं प्यास के दुःख को सहते हैं।

दुःखी पितर भोजन, जल एवं वस्त्र न मिलने पर क्रमश: भूख, प्यास एवं ठण्डी गर्मी को सहते हुए दुःख को झेलते अन्त में अपने वंशजों पर क्रोध करते हैं और बाध्य होकर श्राद्ध न करने वाले अपने सगे-सम्बन्धियों का रक्त चूसने लगते है।
