मार्कण्डेय पुराण के सप्तशती खण्ड में जिन काली देवी का वर्णन है अथवा जिनका जन्म अम्बिका के ललाट से हुआ है वे काली श्री दुर्गा जी के स्वरूपों में से ही एक स्वरूप है तथा आदद्या महाकाली से सर्वथा भिन्न है। भगवती आदद्या काली अथवा दक्षिणा काली अनादिरूपा सारे चराचर की स्वामिनी हैं जबकि पौराणिक काली तमोगुण की स्वामिनी हैं। दक्षिण दिशा में रहने वाला अर्थात् सूर्य का पुत्र यम काली का नाम सुनते ही डरकर भाग जाता है तथा काली उपासकों को नरक में ले जाने की सामर्थ्य उसमें नहीं है इसलिए श्री काली को ‘दक्षिणा काली’ और ‘दक्षिण कालिका’ भी कहा जाता है। – Mahakali Upasana Book.
महाकाली, महाकाल की वह शक्ति है जो काल व समय को नियन्त्रित करके सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि का संचालन करती हैं। आप दसों महाविद्याओं में प्रथम हैं और आद्याशक्ति कहलाती हैं। चतुर्भुजा के स्वरूप में आप चारों पुरूषार्थों को प्रदान करने वाली हैं जबकि दस सिर, दस भुजा तथा दस पैरों से युक्त होकर आप प्राणी की ज्ञानेन्द्रियों और कर्मेन्द्रियों को गति प्रदान करने वाली हैं। शक्ति स्वरूप में आप शव के ऊपर विराजित हैं। इसका अभिप्राय यह है कि शव में आपकी शक्ति समाहित होने पर ही शिव, शिवत्व को प्राप्त करते हैं। यदि शक्ति को शिव से पृथक कर दिया जाये तो शिव भी शव-तुल्य हो जाते हैं। शिव-ई = शव । बिना शक्ति के सम्पूर्ण ब्रह्माण्ड और शिव शव के समान हैं। मेरे कहने का तात्पर्य यह है कि इस सम्पूर्ण सृष्टि में शिव और शक्ति ही सर्वस्व हैं। उनके अतिरिक्त किसी का कोई अस्तित्व नहीं है। – Mahakali Upasana Book.
