There is a saying that without reading the stories, the fast is not complete, and one does not receive the full benefits of the fast. According to the Narada Purana, the Ekadashi fast is very dear to Lord Vishnu. Just as people worship Lord Ganesha on Chaturthi, Lord Shiva on Trayodashi, and Goddess Lakshmi on Panchami. Similarly, on the Ekadashi date, people worship Lord Shri Hari Vishnu.

For the Ekadashi fast, one should bathe in the morning on the Dashami day, worship Lord Vishnu, and sleep near the place of worship at night. The next day, upon waking up (on Ekadashi), after bathing in the morning, one should worship Lord Vishnu. That is with flowers, incense, etc., while chanting the mantras.

हिन्दू धर्मानुसार प्रत्येक महीने की एकादशी तिथि को भगवान विष्णु की पूजा की जाती है৷ इस दिन एकादशी व्रत किया जाता है৷ वैष्णव समाज और हिन्दू धर्म के लिए एकादशी व्रत महत्वपूर्ण और पुण्यकारी माना जाता है৷ साल में कुल 24 एकादशी पड़ती हैं৷ एकादशी वाले दिन भगवान विष्णु की पूजा के लिए लोग पूरे दिन व्रत करते है और श्याम को एकादशी की कथा पढ़ते है৷ कहते हैं कि बिना कथा के व्रत पूर्ण नहीं माना जाता और न ही व्रत का पूर्ण फल मिलता है৷

नारद पुराण के अनुसार एकादशी का व्रत भगवान विष्णु को बेहद प्रिय होता है৷ जिस तरह चतुर्थी को गणेश जी, त्रयोदशी को शिवजी, पंचमी को लक्ष्मी जी की पूजा की जाती है उसी प्रकार एकादशी तिथि को भगवान श्री हरि विष्णु जी की पूजा की जाती है৷ एकादशी व्रत के लिए दशमी के दिन सुबह स्नान करने के बाद भगवान विष्णु की आराधना करना चाहिए तथा रात को पूजा स्थल के समीप सोना चाहिए৷ अगले दिन उठाकर (एकादशी) प्रात: स्नान के बाद व्यक्ति को पुष्प, धूप आदि से भगवान विष्णु की पूजा मंत्र का उच्चारण के साथ करना चाहिए৷
