Upon hearing this, the great devotee Prahlada Ji briefly said that I would now describe the essence of the eighteen Puranas. Prahlad Ji was always engaged in the welfare of all beings, which was explained to Kartikeya by Lord Shankar. Please listen. The one who does not feel sleepy during the night of Ekadashi and who dances and sings enthusiastically is my special devotee.

I grant him supreme knowledge, and Lord Vishnu bestows moksha upon him. Therefore, my devotee should particularly strive to stay awake. Those who remain awake and sing on Ekadashi receive rewards. Equivalent to those of the Agnishtoma and Atirakta sacrifices in half a moment. Those who repeatedly witness the face of Lord Vishnu during night vigils also attain the same fruits.”

सब धर्म के ज्ञाता, वेद और शास्त्रों के अर्थ ज्ञान में पारंगत, सबके हृदय में रमण करने वाले श्री विष्णु के तत्वों को जानने वाले तथा भगवत्परायण प्रहलाद जी जब सुख पूवर्क बैठे हुए थे, उस समय उनके समीप स्वधर्म का पालन करने वाले महर्षि कुछ पूछने के लिए आये৷ महर्षियों ने कहा, प्रहलाद जी, आप कोई ऐसा साधन बताइये, जिससे ज्ञान, ध्यान और इन्द्रिय निग्रह के बिना ही अनायास भगवान विष्णु का परम पद प्राप्त हो जाता है৷

उनके ऐसा कहने पर सम्पूर्ण लोकों के हित के लिए उद्यत रहने वाले विष्णु भक्त महाभाग प्रहलादजी ने संक्षेप में इस प्रकार कहा कि महर्षियों जो अठारह पुराणों का सार से भी सारतर तत्व है, जिसे कार्तिकेय जी के पूछने पर भगवान शंकर ने उन्हें बताया था, उसका वणर्न करता हूँ, सुनिए৷ जिसे एकादशी के जागरण में नींद नहीं आती तथा जो उत्साह पूवर्क नाचता और गाता है, वह मेरा विशेष भक्त है৷

मैं उसे उत्तम ज्ञान देता हूँ৷और भगवान विष्णु मोक्ष प्रदान करते हैं৷ अत: मेरे भक्त को विशेष रुप से जागरण करना चाहिए৷ जो एकादशी को जागरण करते और गाते हैं, उन्हें आधे निमेष में अग्निष्टोम तथा अतिराक्त यज्ञ के समान फल प्राप्त होता है৷ जो रात्रि जागरण में बारंबार भगवान विष्णु के मुखारिवंद का दशर्न करते हैं, उनको भी वही फल प्राप्त होता है৷
