Through Tarpan (a ritual offering to the deities, sages, and ancestors), we are relieved of all three types of debts. The word tarpan is from the root ‘तृप्-तृप्तौ प्रीणने च’ with the suffix लुट्, which means to satisfy or to please. Brahmanas should perform tarpan for the deities, sages, and ancestors daily after purifying themselves through bathing and other rituals.
Although the soul is eternal and immortal, this physical body, made of the five elements, is perishable. After the body falls, the soul, in the form of air, exits and wanders in the atmosphere, remaining in a subtle form near its descendants’ homes for some days. After the Sraddha ceremony is over, it joins the ancestors. Thereafter takes on the forms of Vasu, Rudra, and Aditya, residing in the realm of ancestors. Pitri Narayana always works for the welfare of their descendants, families, and generations.
There is a specific time for the worship of Pitri Narayana during Pitru Paksha. No auspicious work people perform during this period. Moreover, feed Brahmins and donate material goods and clothing according to one’s ability for the peace of the ancestors’ souls. During this time, the ancestors come in an invisible form to accept water, pind, and other offerings. That is from their descendants on earth. This provides them sustenance throughout the year. Hence, the practice of Pitri Tarpan is there in daily rituals.

मानव जन्म ग्रहण करते ही तीन प्रकार के ऋणों से युक्त हो जाता है- देवऋण, ऋषिऋण तथा पितृऋण৷ देवर्षि पितृ तर्पण द्वारा हम तीनों प्रकार के ऋणों से उऋण हो जाते हैं৷ ‘तृप्-तृप्तौ प्रीणने च’ धातु से ल्युट् प्रत्यय के योग से तर्पण शब्द की निष्पत्ति होती है, जिसका अर्थ होता है-तृप्त करना या प्रसन्न करना৷ द्विजों को प्रतिदिन स्नानादि द्वारा पवित्र होकर देवर्षि पितृ तर्पण करना चाहिए৷ यद्यपि आत्मा अजर और अमर है৷’ यह पाञ्चभौतिक शरीर नश्वर है৷ शरीर गिर जाने पर यह आत्मा वायुरूप में शरीर से निकल कर वायुमंडल में भ्रमण करते हुए अपनी सन्तति के घर के आस-पास सूक्ष्म रूप में कुछ दिनों तक विराजमान रहता है৷
श्राद्ध क्रिया सम्पन्न हो जाने पर पितरों के साथ मिलकर यही वसु, रुद्र, आदित्य का स्वरूप धारण कर पितृलोक में निवास करते हैं৷ पितृनारायण सदैव अपनी सन्तति, परिवार एवं पीढ़ी का कल्याण करते हैं৷ पितृनारायण की आराधना के लिए पितृपक्ष का विशेष समय निर्धारित है৷ इस पक्ष में कोई भी शुभ कार्य नहीं किया जाता৷ यह पक्ष पूर्णतः पितरों को समर्पित है৷ पितर इस समय अदृश्य रूप में जल, पिण्डादि ग्रहण करने के लिए पृथ्वी पर अपनी सन्तति के पास आते हैं৷ इसी से उन्हें वर्ष पर्यन्त तृप्ति मिलती है৷ अतः दैनिक क्रिया में पितृतर्पण को महत्त्व दिया गया है৷
