धर्म, अर्थ, काम, मोक्ष, चतुर्विध पुरुषार्थों में काम एवं अन्यतम पुरुषार्थ माना जाता है৷ चूंकि पुरुष इन्हें चाहता है इसीलिए इन्हें पुरुषार्थ कहा जाता हैं৷ ‘धर्म’ की सांगोपांग परिचर्चा करने वालों में मनु और अत्रि आदि धर्म के प्रकाण्ड पण्डितों का नाम बड़े गर्व से लिया जाता है जिन्होंने धर्म शास्त्रों की रचना की৷ प्राचीन आचार्य नन्दी, श्वेतकेतु, बाभ्रव्य और वात्स्यायन आदि ने ‘काम’ का वर्णन करने के लिए अनेक’ काम-शास्त्रों’ की रचना की৷ इन सब में आचार्य वात्स्यायन का ‘कामसूत्र’ समस्त विद्वत् जनों द्वारा अधिक मौलिक व प्रमाणिक माना जाता है और आदर की दृष्टि से देखा जाता है৷
यह सर्वविदित है कि जगत का आदि कारण परब्रह्म परमात्मा आनन्द स्वरूप है৷ काम भी उसी आनन्दमय परमात्मा की प्रतिमूर्ति है৷ ऋग्वेद में गृहस्थाश्रम में काम का महत्व इस प्रकार बताया गया है৷ ‘काम’ अपने में अत्यन्त पवित्र विषय है৷ गृहस्थाश्रम के सम्पूर्ण सुखानन्द के लिए कामशास्त्र का सम्यक अध्ययन सभी अधिकारी सज्जनों के लिए आवश्यक है৷ जो मानव-जाति के लिए सार्वकालिक सिद्ध होंगी৷ कहने का तात्पर्य यह है कि गृहस्थाश्रमी ही इस शास्त्र के अध्ययन के अधिकारी हैं৷ कामसूत्रम् को पढ़कर और कामजन्य सुख के लाभों और हानियों का अनुभव करके मानव निवृत्ति मार्ग का ऐसा सफल अधिकारी बन सकता है जो कदापि पथभ्रष्ट नहीं होगा৷
