सामान्यतः सहजता से सुलभ किन्तु औषधीय गुणों में महत्त्वपूर्ण तथा विषाक्तता से रहित 439 पादपों के स्वरूप एवं उनके उपयोग का अच्छी तरह वर्णन किया गया है৷ आयुर्वेद का यह प्रथम ग्रन्थ है जिसमें हस्तनिर्मित छायाचित्र दिए गए हैं৷ प्रथम बार वैदिक पादप वर्गिकी के अन्तर्गत (संस्कृत भाषाश्रित द्विनामपद्धति पर आधारित) पादपों के वैदिक नामों को दिया गया है৷
