Garuda Purana Book (गरुड़ पुराण पुस्तक): The Garuda Purana is a major scripture associated with the Vaishnavism tradition. It is considered to provide salvation after death in Sanatana Dharma. Therefore, there is a provision in Sanatana Hinduism for the recitation of the Garuda Purana after death. Lord Vishnu is the presiding deity of this Purana.
It describes the glory of devotion, knowledge, renunciation, good conduct, and selfless action and encourages everyone to engage in auspicious activities such as sacrifices, charity, austerity, and pilgrimage by detailing various worldly and spiritual benefits. The Purana consists of two parts: the Purva Khand and the Uttara Khand. The Uttara Khand is also famous as the Preta Kalpa. The ‘Preta Kalpa’ contains 35 chapters.
These chapters discuss the nature of death, the condition of a dying person, and the rituals to perform at the end of life for their welfare. It elaborates on the reasons for attaining Yama Lok, Preta Lok, and Preta Yoni, the glory of giving, and the ways to avoid the spirit state, as well as rituals and Shraddha. In this, Lord Vishnu also informs Garuda about the fate of a person. That is at the time of death and immediately after. And how they are reborn in various forms of life.
