पौराणिक कथा के अनुसार, एक बार महाराज युधिष्ठिर ने राजसूय यज्ञ किया और यज्ञ मंडप का निर्माण बहुत ही सुंदर व और अद्भुत रूप से किया गया৷ उस मंडप में जल की जगह स्थल तो स्थल की जगह जल की भ्रांति होती थी৷ इससे दुर्योधन एक स्थल को देखकर जल कुण्ड में जा गिरे৷ द्रौपदी ने यह देखकर उनका उपहास किया और कहा कि अंधे की संतान भी अंधी होती है৷ इस कटुवचन से दुर्योधन बहुत आहत हुए और इस अपमान का बदला लेने के लिए उसने युधिष्ठिर को द्युत अर्थात जुआ खेलने के लिए बुलाया और छल से जीतकर पांडवों को 12 वर्ष वनवास दे दिया৷
अनंत चतुर्दशी व्रत को भगवान विष्णु की कृपा पाने के लिए मनाया जाता है৷ इस दिन भगवान विष्णु की पूजा की जाती है और अनंतसूत्र बांधा जाता है৷ पौराणिक कथाओं के मुताबिक, जब पांडव वनवास में थे, तब भगवान श्रीकृष्ण ने युधिष्ठिर को अनंत चतुर्दशी का व्रत करने की सलाह दी थी৷ इस व्रत के प्रभाव से पांडवों को उनका खोया राज्य वापस मिल गया था और उनके सभी कष्ट दूर हो गए৷
