सब संसार में ज्योतिष शास्त्रका चमत्कार प्रसिद्ध है, बड़े २ महा- विद्वान् महर्षियोंने इस शास्त्र के अनेक ग्रंथ निर्माण किये हैं৷ यह एक ऐसा शास्त्र है कि, जिसके द्वारा भूत, भविष्य, वर्तमान तीनों कालों के वृत्तान्त जान जाते है, यदि पूर्ण ज्योतिषी हो तो कैसा भी कुतर्की हो उसको अपनी विद्यासे विश्वास करा सकता है৷ जब तक इस देश में ज्योतिष के सिद्धांत- ग्रंथ लब्ध होते थे और पूर्ण पंडित इस विद्याके पाये जाते थे तब तक जो कुछ वे गणित द्वारा फल कथन करते थे৷ उसमें किसी प्रकार का फेरफार नहीं होता था৷ कालक्रम से सिद्धांत ग्रंथों का लोप होने लगा৷

गुरुमुख से विद्या उपार्जन करनेमें आलस्य आया सिद्धान्त ग्रंथों को छिपाने की परिपाटी चली, शिष्यों ने नम्रता त्यागी और दीर्घ काल परिश्रम न करके कार्यवाही मात्र से वही अपनेको कृतकृत्य मानने लगे৷ तबसे ज्योतिष शास्त्र में कुछ न्यूनता सी आ गई और मनुष्यों को भी कुछ कुछ विराग होने लगा तथा कोई २ आक्षेप भी करने लगे৷ परंतु “सबै दिन नाहि बरोबर जात” इस वाक्य के अनुसार अंग्रेजी सरकार के राज्य में कुछ २ फिर विद्या की वृद्धि के यत्न किये जाने लगे और यंत्रालयों से अनेक ग्रंथ प्रकाशित होने लगे৷
