अलख का मतलब है जिसे देखा नहीं जा सकता, यानी निराकार ब्रह्म. अलख उपासना का मतलब है, अपने जीवन को अपने हृदय की समझ से महसूस करना, ब्रह्म स्वरूप में स्थिर होकर जीना, और अपने आत्मिक रूप को समझना৷ अलख उपासना के लिए सात्विक सीमित आहार लेना, वाक् संयम रखना, इंद्रिय निग्रह करना, स्वाध्याय और सत्संग करना होता है৷ उपासना शब्द का मतलब है पास बैठना या ध्यान देना. उपासना में, मन, वचन, और कर्म से ईश्वर के अभिमुख होना होता है৷
