यह रोग लाइलाज नहीं है इस पुस्तक में यही कहा गया है। हजारों साल पूर्व सर्वप्रथम सुश्रुत ने मधुमेह के लक्षणों का वर्णन किया है। सुश्रुत के अनुसार, मधुमेह के रोगियों में अत्यधिक भूख व प्यास तथा खुशबूदार तथा सुगन्धित श्वास के लक्षण दिखते हैं। ग्रीस के चिकित्सकों ने भी अपने प्राचीन वैद्यक शास्त्रों में मधुमेह को ‘पिघलाने वाला रोग’ या ‘नष्ट कर देने वाला रोग’ से विभूषित किया है।
