ज्योतिष मूलतः आकाश में मौजूद इकइयो पर ही आधारित है। आकाश एक विस्तित घटक है, जिसका कोई न ज्ञात है, न ही अंत ही हा इसके कुछ घटकों का ज्ञान मनुष्य कर पाया है। ऊपर की और दृष्टी डालने से केवल एक खाली-सा स्थान नज़र आता है। इस खाली से स्थान में वृहद् स्थान में वस्तुतः कुछ चमकते हुए पिंड नज़र आते है। उनमे से कुछ तारे कहा गया है एक को सूर्य, एक को चंद्रमा तथा कही कही तारो के कुछ समूह भी दिखाई पड़ते है। सभी तारो समूहों के विषय में अभी तक अभी तक वैज्ञानिको को भी बहुत कुछ ज्ञात नही हो पाया है। तारो की आक्रति व हमसे उनकी दूरी, हर एक तारे के चमक का स्तर उन पर जीवन से जुड़ा कोई घटक, जैसे – मिट्टी, ऑक्सीजन, कार्बन डाइऑक्साइड, जल, कई जीवित जीव कुछ ऐसे प्रश्न है, जिनका मनुष्य को अभी तक कुछ अता-पता नही है। -Jyotish Prakash Book.
कल्पनाएँ तो है। मात्र इन कल्पनाओं को ही अभी विश्वास में लिया जाता है। तारो की दूरी पता लगाने से पहली इनकी आकृति का ज्ञान होना संभव नही लगता है। तारो से आने वाली रौशनी ही हम सबको दिखाई पड़ती है, अर्थात अधिक चमकिली तथा कुछ की कम चमकीली। यह नही कहा जा सकता की इनकी चमक का अंतर का कारण हमसे इनकी कम ज्यादा की दूरी के कारण होता है या फिर इनकी आकृति छोटी बड़ी है तथा इनसे उत्पन्न होने वाली रौशनी कम- ज्यादा है। यह सब मालूम करने के साधन शायद मनुष्य के पास नही है। जितने साधन मनुष्य के पास है, उतना ही कुछ ज्ञात हो पाया है, बाकि विषय में प्रयास जारी है। तारो के कुछ समूह मनुष्य ने मालूम किये है। इन तारो के समूहों को मनुष्य ने तारापुंज, नक्षत्र का नाम दिया गया है। -Jyotish Prakash Book.
