Grah Laghav Book
Grah Laghav Book (ग्रह लाघव पुस्तक): Grah laghav is a famous Sanskrit text on astronomy. Its author is Ganesh Daivagya. The Surya Siddhanta and Grahalaghava are the foundational texts for the Indian Panchang. In the sixteen chapters of the entire text, there are 192 verses detailing methods for calculating planetary positions. The verse from the Madhyamadhikara is of great importance in explaining which planet aligns with which theory of trigonometry.
Currently, only fourteen chapters of this text are popular, but in the commentaries of Vishwanath and Mallari, there is a fifteenth chapter, famous as ‘Panchang Grahana Adhikara’ that consists of fifteen verses. Out of the fourteen chapters, four are related to eclipses. Therefore, it seems that an additional chapter on eclipses was rendered unnecessary and has been lost.
It appears that Ganesh deliberately ignored precision in some instances due to his preference for simplifying mathematics, which is why, despite having two chapters on lunar and solar eclipses, he has written two additional chapters, the seventh and eighth, which do not serve any real purpose. Some verses in Grahalaghava are either fewer or more in number.
