Vedas are apaurusheya, hence astrology, which is a part of Vedanga, is also apaurusheya, that is, it has been in existence since the beginning of the world. In chronological order, 18 founders of astrology have been considered.

Apart from the above mentioned 18 founders of astrology, there is a long series of scholars who have enhanced astrology through their research and interpretation. Many books of the sages who were the founders of astrology were destroyed in the invasions of the Yavanas and many have been lost. Even then, invaluable material of astrology exists in all countries in published and unpublished form. ज्योतिष शास्त्र के उक्त 18 प्रणेताओं के अतिरिक्त ज्योतिष की अपने शोधों और व्याख्या के द्वारा अभिवृद्धि करने वाले विद्वानों की एक लम्बी श्रृंखला है। ज्योतिष के प्रवर्तक ऋषियों के अनेक ग्रन्थ यवनों के आक्रमणों में नष्ट हो गये तथा बहुत से लुप्त हो गये हैं। फिर भी ज्योतिष की अमूल्य सामग्री प्रकाशित और अप्रकाशित रूप में सभी देशों में विद्यमान हैं। ज्योतिष का विस्तार ज्योतिष के प्रणेताओं ने बड़ी सूझबूझ से ग्रह-गणित और ग्रह-रश्मि के प्रभावों- दोनों को मिलाकर त्रिस्कन्ध ज्योतिष शास्त्र का निर्माण किया।
