Shivling/Lingam (शिवलिंग) : Matsya Purana states when depicting Lord Shiva, the Lord should be garlanded with snakes. Most images of Shiva in modern day only depict a single snake around his neck. The five-headed snake forming a canopy over Shivling is another common representation. Puranas and other holy scriptures have numerous tales associating snakes and Lord Shiva. (Lingam). It is said the serpent on Shiva’s neck represent the endless cycle of birth and regeneration. Another symbolism is that the snake on neck represents ego which once controlled can be worn as an ornament.

Legend has it that all the snakes found on Lord Shiva’s body became ornaments during his marriage with Parvati. It is also said that Shiva made ornaments out of poisonous snakes and submitted it to Parvati as gift. Snakes, especially cobras, are said to carry ‘mani’ (rubies) in their head. It is said that these rubies serve as lamp during night to Parvati and Shiva. -Shivling. The Shiva Purana described Lingam as the beginning less and endless Pillar interpreting as a Cosmic Pillar symbolizing the infinite nature of Shiva.

The Linga Purana stated that the nature itself is a Linga meaning the Lingam is devoid of color, taste, hearing touch etc and is described as Prakarti or nature. In Skanda Purana Shiva Lingam is described as Shiva from whom the whole universe is created and where it finally submerges. Shvetasvatara Upanishad says that Lord Shiva, the Supreme Being, has no Linga (sign or symbol). In simple terms it means it is impossible to define Brahman who is formless Shiva. -Shivling.

Thus Shivling represents Almighty Supreme Shiva who is formless. He has no physical form. Every form is his form. The entire Universe is his form. We call him Mahadev which mean he is God of Gods. Here we should not get confused with God Shiva or God Shankar.
