Description

Cowrie Conch/Cowrie Puja Shankh (कौड़ी शंख): The Cowrie Puja Shankh is also an algae eater, ranging in size from less than 1/4″ to about 8″ in length, depending on the species. To date, there are more than 250 different species classified as “Cowry”. The snail is active at night and hides in rocks and crevices during the day. Cowry (plural cowries) is the general name for a group of small to large marine gastropods, marine gastropods of the family Cypraeidae, and cowries.

The Cowrie Puja Shankh is ovoid in shape with a smooth and shiny porcelain look and colorful designs. The ancient Romans called the seashell porchetta, which led to the name porcelain, which describes the beautiful shiny fine ceramics imported to Europe from the Far East, because their luster and shape reminded people of porcelette shells. The Cowrie Conch has also been used throughout the ages as currency. Especially in ancient tribal cultures and in parts of Africa until the early 20th century. The Chinese currency symbol is a stylized carapace emblem.

The term porcelain comes from the old Italian term for cow shell (porcellana) due to its similar appearance. Shells of certain species have historically people use as currency in several parts of the world. Moreover, also they use in jewelry and other decorative and ceremonial purposes in the past and present. The Cowrie Conch is the most widely using shell worldwide. It is most abundant in the Indian Ocean. And that is in the Maldives, Sri Lanka, along the Malabar coast, Borneo, and other East Indian islands.
