अष्टावक्र एक ऐसे बुद्ध पुरुष थे जिनका नाम आध्यात्मिक जगत् में बड़े सम्मान से लिया जाता है। अल्प आयु में ही इन्हें आत्मज्ञान हो गया था। इनके जीवन के बारे में एक कथा है कि ये शरीर के आठ अंगों से टेढ़े-मेढ़े कुरूप तो थे ही, अंगों के टेढ़े-मेढ़े होने का कारण था कि जब वह गर्भ में थे तो उस समय इनके पिता एक दिन वेदपाठ कर रहे थे तो इन्होंने गर्भ से ही अपने पिता को टोक दिया था कि रुको, यह सब बकवास है शास्त्रों में ज्ञान कहाँ?

ज्ञान तो स्वयं के भीतर है। सत्य शास्त्रों में नही, स्वयं में है। यह कथा इस तथ्य को प्रकट करती है कि अष्टावक्र का ज्ञान पुस्तकों, पंडितों और समाज से अर्जित नहीं था बल्कि पूरा का पूरा स्वयं लेकर पैदा हुये थे। इसी बारह वर्ष के बालक अष्टावक्र से जब राजा जनक ने अपनी जिज्ञासाओं का समाधान कराया तो यही शंका का समाधान ये अष्टावक्र गीता है।
