Hanumannatak Book (हनुमन्नाटक पुस्तक): It is quite difficult to find out exactly when “Shri Hanuman Natak” was composed. This is because even today, among those great individuals who made immense efforts to find out the dates of various renowned epic poets in Sanskrit history, some of them managed to determine the exact timeline of their works while others have only estimated it. None of these scholars has provided any exact or estimated information regarding the date of this “Mahanatak” until now. This indicates that they could not find any material to definitively establish its date of composition.

According to one verse, it is a belief that Hanuman Ji has composed and written it on stones. When Valmiki composed his Ramayana, he thought to himself, “Who will read my work in the presence of this nectar (Hanuman’s work)?” He prayed to Shri Hanuman and, with his permission, had this great play established in the ocean. But, after hearing tales from learned scholars, the immensely wise King Bhoj had it brought out of the ocean. Thereafter, Damodar Mishra, the scholar in his court, collected everything.

“श्री हनुमन्नाटक” किस समय रचा गया, इस बात का पूरा पता लगना जरा कठिन है৷ क्योंकि आज तक संस्कृत इतिहास की खोज करने- वाले जिन महानुभावों ने अन्यान्य प्रसिद्ध महाकाव्यों के रचयिताओं के समय आदिका पता लगाने में परम परिश्रम किया है, उनमें से किसी ने रचनाकाल का साक्षात् पता लगाया है और किसी ने समय आदिका अनुमान किया है৷ परन्तु उन विज्ञों में से किसीने भी इस ‘महानाटक’ के विषय में आजतक साक्षात् रूपसे वा अनुमान करके इसके समयादिका कुछ उल्लेख नहीं किया৷ इससे अनुमान होता है कि, अभीतक इसके रचनाकालका निश्चय होने की कोई सामग्री प्राप्त नहीं हुई है৷

एक श्लोक के अनुसार इसको पवनकुमार ने रचा और शिलाओं पर लिखा था৷ परन्तु जब वाल्मीकि जी ने अपनी रामायण रची तब यह समझकर कि इस अमृत के सामने मेरी रचना को कौन पढ़ेगा৷ उन्होंने श्रीहनुमान जी से प्रार्थना करके उनकी आज्ञा से इस महानाटक को समुद्र में स्थापित करा दिया৷ परन्तु विद्वानों से किम्वदन्ती को सुनकर परम सुबुद्धि राजा भोजने इसको समुद्र में से निकलवाया और जो कुछ मिला उसको उनकी सभा के विद्वान् दामोदर मिश्र ने संगतिपूर्वक संगृहीत किया৷
