छत्रपति शिवाजी महाराज के मन में संत तुकाराम के प्रति बहुत आदर था৷ उनके भक्तिभाव को देखकर वे बहुत प्रभावित हुए৷ एक बार उन्होंने सन्त तुकाराम के घर पालकी भेजकर उनके स्वागत का आयोजन किया৷ परन्तु संत तुकाराम को यह सब देखकर दुःख हुआ৷ उन्होंने अपने मन में सोचा कि “यह है मेरी भक्ति का फल? क्या इसी के लिये भक्ति करता हूँ?”

उनको ऐसा प्रतीत हुआ मानों भगवान् मान- सम्मान का फल उनके हाथ में थमाकर, उनसे दूर होना चाहते हैं৷ तुकाराम स्वयं से बात करने लगे- हे प्रभु आपका ऐसा स्वभाव अच्छा नहीं है৷ भक्ति तो पारस से भी कीमती है और मान सम्मान तो माया का ही एक रूप है৷ हे प्रभु आप कृपा करके मुझे इस मुसीबत से बचाओ৷
