“विवाह संस्कार विधि” नाम की एक पुस्तक सन् १६३३ में पहली बार स्वर्गीय पण्डित दीनबन्धु मिश्र, वैद्य ने प्रकाशित की थी। स्वर्गीय मिश्र जी का उद्देश्य था, कि सभी संस्कारों की विधियों ऐसी सुगम तथा सरल रीति से प्रकाशित की जाएँ, जिससे सामान्य पुरोहित वर्ग भी सभी संस्कार सुविधापूर्वक सम्पन्न करा सकें। इसी सन्दर्भ में स्वर्गीय मिश्र जी ने विवाह संस्कार तथा उपनयन संस्कार’ की पुस्तक प्रकाशित की थी, जिसकी सर्वत्र सराहना हुई।
उपनयन संस्कार जिसमें जनेऊ पहना जाता है और विद्यारंभ होता है। मुंडन और पवित्र जल में स्नान भी इस संस्कार के अंग होते हैं। सूत से बना वह पवित्र धागा जिसे यज्ञोपवीतधारी व्यक्ति बाएँ कंधे के ऊपर तथा दाईं भुजा के नीचे पहनता है। यज्ञोपवीत एक विशिष्ट सूत्र को विशेष विधि से ग्रन्थित करके बनाया जाता है। “उपनयन’ वैदिक परंपरा की अनुयायी आर्य संस्कृति का एक महत्वपूर्ण संस्कार था।
