शक्ति समय-समय के अनुसार सभी युगों में पूजित हुई हैं, क्योंकि शक्ति की उपासना के बिना कोई भी कार्य सम्भव नहीं है৷ कभी हम शक्ति को काली, दुर्गा, लक्ष्मी, सरस्वती, वाराही इत्यादि के रूप में पूजित करते हैं, किन्तु शक्ति एक ही है, इसके रूप भिन्न-भिन्न है৷ जैसे यह कभी काली, कभी दुर्गा, कभी लक्ष्मी, कभी सरस्वती, कभी वाराही कभी साक्षात् चण्डी का रूप ग्रहण करती हैं৷ काल अर्थात् शिवजी की पत्नी काली के विभिन्न रूप हैं৷ तन्त्रशास्त्र काली को ही आद्याशक्ति महामाया के नाम से पूजित करते हैं, क्योंकि काली ही संसार की प्रसूति तथा जीव-जगत की मुक्ति- भुक्ति प्रदायिनी है, यह तर्क सर्व सम्मत से मान्य है৷
