Rudaksha FAQ: (Q) Why do people say it’s bad to wear a broken Rudraksha bead?

(A) Know that the energy of the Rudraksha bead comes from the seeds. This energy is transmitted through the thorns, which get chipped off with time, but this doesn’t reduce the potential of the bead. The other thorns perform their function. But if the bead is defiled by worms and the seed within gets destroyed and the Rudraksha is cracked, then it becomes ineffective. Wearing a damaged bead will not give you any benefit and will do no harm either.

Rudaksha FAQ: (Q) What does Nepali 1 Mukhi look like, then? Many people reject its existence and even a recognized brand like yours does not deal with Nepali 1 mukhi, then who does?

(A) If someone has sold you a Rudraksha saying it is Ek-Mukhi Nepal, you must realise the bead is fake. Ek mukhi Nepal Rudraksha is extremely rare and hasn’t been known to reach the general public. Today it exists only in mythology. We have suppliers in Nepal who have farms there and for generations, they haven’t seen an Ek-mukhi Rudraksha being produced from the trees.

Because of the high virtues of this Rudraksha in Vedic texts, the market is full of fake Ek-mukhis which are made by cutting segments out of 2,3,4 or 5 faced Rudraksha and removing all lines expect one. A 2-mukhi Rudraksha from Haridwar and Nepal is also used to make 1 mukhi because here, only one line needs to be removed. In some 2 mukhi and 3 mukhi beads, the lines are not fully developed and you can see the incomplete lines at the mouth. Sometimes, a 2 mukhi Nepal bead is fastened with a steel grip on the tree itself so that the second line isn’t formed and this bead is sold as 1-mukhi. But this bead will obviously not give you the effects of a genuine 1 mukhi.

Test: When you conduct an X-ray of the bead, it should show only one hole (compartment) inside with only one seed. Sometimes underdeveloped 4 or 5 mukhi Rudraksha beads are sold as 1 mukhi bead, but an X-ray will reveal the multiple compartments/seeds inside.

If you have a 1-mukhi Rudraksha from Haridwar, which has only one clear line and is very thorny, it is actually a Bhadraksha. This bead has no central hole and when a hole is drilled, it goes through the middle of the bead and destroys the seed.

The commonly available cashew-shaped one Mukhi is actually not an Ek-mukhi from Nepal but from South India and Sri Lanka and it is a Bhadraksha. It has no central hole. Because of the presence of one seed, and hence one compartment, the bead is eye-shaped rather than round. This bead is accepted as a substitute for 1 mukhi and generally kept on the puja altar for worship.

In recent times, the 1 mukhi Java variety, which is eye-shaped and has a natural single compartment and single seed has come to be the most widely accepted counterpart for the 1 mukhi Nepal Rudraksha and has all its properties.

Rudaksha FAQ: (Q) How we know that the Rudraksha is original, and also how to tell whether is it alive or dead?

(A) A real good quality Rudraksha will have the mukhis well defined, running from end to end. Its corns and contours will be natural and there will be no cracks along the mukhis. The bead has to be lustrous and devoid of insect holes. Usually the one-mukhi Rudraksha or beads higher than 12 mukhi are faked by traders to earn good profits. A higher mukhi is fashioned by carving a lower mukhi into having extra segments. Sometimes, several lower mukhi Rudraksha are glued together to make a higher mukhi Rudraksha. Beads of Areca nut, Nutmeg or wood are carved to fashion Rudraksha beads with mukhis. Here are few methods of testing a genuine Rudraksha:

  • Look at it closely: A real Rudraksha will have a lustrous body with well-defined grooves or mukhis. A fake or artificially made Rudraksha may look like a real one, but its facets (mukhis) cannot be made as real as those on the real bead. The facets or the mukhis denotes the deep lines running from the upper part to the lower part of Rudraksha. Looking at these deep linings (facets) with the help of a magnifying glass, one can easily recognize a real Rudraksha. Also, if a fully grown ripe bead is immersed in water, it will float because of its weight. An underdeveloped bead or one that’s rotten inside is likely to float.
  • Take an X-ray of the Rudraksha bead. It will have a central hole and seeds corresponding to the mukhis (compartments). Sometimes the seeds are very small or compartments are very close to each other, in that case a CT scan will have to be done to determine the seeds.
  • Another way is to find out whether the beads exhibit properties like inductance, capacitance, conduction of electric current etc. If you hold the Rudraksha bead in your hand, you should be able to feel its tiny electric current, like a slight throbbing of the heart.
  • It is generally held that if Rudraksha beads are placed between two copper coins it should rotate slightly. This is due to the physical and magnetic properties of the Rudraksha beads. This test requires high level of expertise.

Regarding whether the bead is alive or dead, if the bead has some weight and lustre, it is alive. If it is so weightless that you can blow it away, or it looks washed out, or jet black in colour and extremely dry, then the bead is dead.

Rudaksha FAQ: (Q) Should you wear Rudraksha while eating?

(A) Of course, you must wear your Rudraksha beads for 12-14 hours daily so that they remain energised and act optimally on your body Chakras for healing and wellbeing. Rudaksha FAQ: (Q) Is Indonesia Rudraksha inferior to Nepali Rudraksha? Why are Indonesian Rudraksha cheape

Ans: Scientifically, there is no difference in the internal structure of Indonesian and Java beads. However, Nepal beads are larger in size, thorny with several projections and having deep clear mukhis. The mukhi lines are embedded deep in the outer surface and Nepal beads vary from 14mm- 40mm in size with an average size 20mm.

Java beads are much smaller with smoother surface and mukhi lines visible as white lines from one hole to the other very close to the surface and not etched deep. Sizes of Java beads vary from 2mm-20mm, with average of 12mm.

The size has more to do with personal choice. Some people prefer bigger beads due to their magnificent beauty, some like the small size due to ease of wearing. Effect wise, both work the same over an extended length of time. It is possible that larger beads awaken faster to give effects due to increase in surface area.

It is possible that due to lesser surface area and lesser projections, effects with java beads could be visible after a slightly longer duration than Nepal beads. However testimonials and feedbacks received from clients using Nepal Vs Java beads, have been almost similar. Both have reported excellent results. So seems spiritually there is no difference.

Regarding the price, the cost of Rudraksha beads are based on demand and supply. Due to limited areas of production and increase in demand every year, the prices for both varieties have been constantly rising. Rudra Centre purchases 90% of the produce of healthy Indonesian beads (in the mukhi variety). Due to this hold, we are able to keep prices in check. In Nepal beads, despite being a major buyer, competition from suppliers in India and also buyers from Japan and China, it is not possible to keep prices in check. However we try to pick the healthiest, ripe and best beads of the season for our esteemed customers.

(Q) How do I know that my Rudraksha bead is healthy?

(A) See that the bead has a healthy glow and has weight. Weight of the Rudraksha comes from the moist seeds inside it. If the Rudraksha is not healthy, it will become blackish in color and dry on the surface as the seeds would have dried out.

(Q) My Rudraksha has few thorns broken. Will it work?

(A) Thorns on the Rudraksha bead surface tend to fall off over time as you wear them. But this does not make the bead lose efficacy as the power of the bead is from the seeds within and lose few thorns (like losing few hair from the skin), does not reduce its effectiveness. However if the Rudraksha bead gets infested with worms who eat through the seeds, one needs to discard them.

(Q) My Rudraksha has developed cracks on the surface. Will it work?

(A) Many times the crack develop due to expansion or contraction of the exterior wooden surface due to change in weather. Wash the bead in water often and oil it every few days. It is possible that the cracks will fill up and the bead would work as good.
