Mundane astrology or Medhini Jyotish The word ‘Mundane’ refers to earth. Hence, Mundane Astrology focuses mainly on the future of the different countries existing on the earth. Mundane Astrology is a branch of Astrology that examines the charts of countries and their rulers in predicting the future of the country. Mundane Astrology is also called ‘Medhini Jyotish’ or ‘Dasa Gochara’ in Vedic culture. It is also referred to as ‘Political Astrology’ by modern Astrologers.
Mundane Astrology is the attempt to systematically explore predictions and possibilities about the future and how they can emerge from the present, whether that of human society in particular or of life on Earth in general.
The Sun, Moon, and planets represent different communities of nations of the world. The Sun represents the leaders – prime ministers, aristocracy, magistrates, and judges – those in authority positions. It can also include heroes and champions admired by the public. The Moon represents the common person and its position on a chart will often indicate on what the public’s attention is focused. Mercury represents the literary world – publishers, newspapers, books, and intellects. This planet denotes a nation’s communication and transport issues. Venus represents women and their issues such as birth rate, marriage and children. It can also represent entertainment, the arts, sports, musicians, and peaceful resolutions to problems. Mars represents all things related to war and opposition – military, navy, soldiers, attacks, disputes, conflicts, and fire. Jupiter represents both the religious and the judicial world. It includes priests and religious leaders as well as bankers and judges. Saturn represents the elderly and the nation’s death rate. It can signify deadly epidemics, state funerals, and anything that would cause public sadness. Uranus represents political tension such as rioting, fascism, individualism, right wing political ideas but it can also represent scientific discoveries. Neptune represents left wing political ideas such as socialism and communism. It can also represent covert plots, fraud, illicit activities, and loss. Pluto represents change and rebirth.
Mundane astrology uses a chart, but instead of the chart being for an individual, it is drawn up for a nation or country. Like a personal horoscope, a chart can be drawn up for a nation or country by using a particularly important date such as an official inauguration or a leader’s birth.
What can be done with mundane astrology? With so many countries in turmoil right now, mundane astrology can be used to help these countries see where they are going – if they are headed for peace or disaster. And if they are headed for disaster, by using mundane astrology, they can know before it strikes and either take steps to prevent it or at the very least plan for the coming disaster. If a country has just gone through a turbulent time, like a revolution, mundane astrology can help the citizens of that country understand the importance of such a change.
Mundane astrology charts for cities, organizations, nations, and events along with other techniques in mundane astrology assess the “possible, probable, and preferable” futures, plus “Wildcards,” which are low-probability, high-impact events, should they occur.
Even with high-profile, probable events, for example such as the fall of crude oil prices, the collapse of consumption based economies that outsource their manufacturing, the growth of the internet, or the aging baby-boomer demographics of particular countries, there is often significant uncertainty in the rate or continuation of a trend.
Thus, a key part of futures analysis is the understanding and management of uncertainty and risk.
The natal chart for many is seen as the map of an individuals’ drive for self-development, self-actualization, and self-fulfilment to his or her success or frustration… which is in contrast to the mundane horoscope that indicates the needs and demands of the masses, which may be counter to the striving of the individual.
Mundane astrology, therefore, provides the philosophical and archetypal link between the destiny of the individual and that of the mass, as well to all the differing concerns of the collective.
So, in essence, the purpose of mundane astrology is to understand, articulate, and forecast the collective transformational forces of humanity as a whole, as a civilization, and its relation with the Cosmos.
There are references to Mundane Astrology in Ramayana. So, its existence can be traced back to several lakh of years in India. Varahamihira gives a vivid description of Mundane Astrology in his great work ‘Birhat Samhita‘. Western Astrologers like Ptolemy, Sepharial, Alan Leo and Raphael had made tremendous effort on this subject.
Unlike Natal Astrology which focuses on the individual horoscope of a person, Mundane Astrology mainly focuses on the future of a country. It is possible to forecast the time when the ruling party of a country changes, when the country will have conflict with her neighbours, when epidemic diseases spread, when natural calamities like floods and famine are possible and when the people revolt against the Government etc. events in advance. When such things are known in advance, required contingency plans can be adopted to alleviate the problem.
To know the future of a country, Mundane Astrology uses several horoscope charts. First of all, the chart of the birth of the country is required. It means chart for the formation day or Independence Day of the country.
Next, the birth (natal) chart of the ruler of the country is important. It means the birth chart of the President or Prime Minister of the country.
A chart drawn for the moment when the Sun enters the Aries 0 degree is also needed. This is called ‘Solar ingress chart’. The word ingress comes from the Latin ingresses, to ‘go in’ or ‘enter’. The solar ingress chart represents the beginning of new cycle for the Sun to go round the zodiac.
Charts for the time of Solar and Lunar eclipses provide clues regarding bad events taking place that year.
Chart representing the transits of planets during that year.
In addition, the Astrologer should have information about the ruling sign, ruling planet and ruling star of the country.
Horoscope chart for India
Most Astrologers take the horoscope chart of India for the Aug 15th, 1947 at 12.00 AM, New Delhi when she became independent. On that day, India acquired only a dominion status under the British Crown. But she was not fully free. She became a sovereign democratic republic only on January 26th, 1950 at 10.18 AM. From this date onwards, she attained her freedom fully and hence this date should be taken for the purpose of predicting the future of India.
Ptolemy’s classification of countries into zodiac is still followed in Western Astrology. According to Ptolemy, the ruling sign for England and Germany is Aries. The ruling sign for USA is Gemini. The ruling sign for India is Capricorn.
According to Indian scholars, the ruling sign for India is Virgo. India, a spiritual land extends from Sharad of Kashmir to Kanya Kumari in the extreme South. These two female deities point to feminine sign Virgo (Kanya) as a ruling sign of India.
