Hari Sharan Ashtakam (हरि शरण अष्टकम): Hari Sharan Ashtakam is the Ashtakam dedicated to Lord Hari or Mahavishnu. The name Hari appears as the 650th name of Vishnu in the Vishnu Sahasranama Stotra of the Mahabharata.

The Sanskrit word ‘Sharnam’ means shelter. This mantra asks that we be brought to Hari’s shelter, a place of refuge. The blessing of Hari’s protection removes all anxieties.

Hari Sharan Ashtakam Stotra was composed and recited in praise of Hari by Prahlad. The Hari SharanAshtakam is a prayer dedicated to Vishnu as Hari. Hari means one who shows you the true path and removes the illusion or Maya in which you live. This is a Stotra if recited with utmost devotion set one on the right path of Moksha or ultimate liberation

Hari is a name for the supreme absolute in the Vedas, Guru Granth Sahib and many other sacred texts of South Asia. In Rigveda’s Purusha Suktam (Praise of the supreme cosmic being), Hari is the first and most important name of god (Brahman), alternative name of supreme being is Narayan after Hari and Purusha according to Narayan Suktam of yajurveda. In the Hindu tradition, it is often used interchangeably with Vishnu to such an extent that they are considered to be one and the same. In Vedas, it is required to use the mantra “Hari Om” before any recitation, just to declare that every ritual we perform is an offer to that supreme divine even if the hymn praises any demigod. In Hinduism, kirtan or praise songs of any god has a common name known as Hari kirtan and katha or storytelling is known as Hari katha.

ध्येयं वदन्ति शिवमेव हि केचिदन्ये शक्तिं गणेशमपरे तु दिवाकरं वै ।

रूपैस्तु तैरपि विभासि यतस्त्वमेव तस्मात्त्वमेव शरणं मम दीनबन्धो ।।1।।

नो सोदरो न जनको जननी न जाया नैवात्मजो न च कुलं विपुलं बलं वा ।

संदृश्यते न किल कोऽपि सहायको मे। तस्मा. ।।2।।

नोपासिता मदमपास्य मया महान्तस्तीर्थानि चास्तिकधिया न हि सेवितानि।

देवार्चनं च विधिवन्न कृतं कदापि। तस्मा. ।।3।।

दुर्वासना मम सदा परिकर्षयन्ति चित्तं शरीरमपि रोगगणा दहन्ति।

संजीवनं च परहस्तगतं सदैव। तस्मा. ।।4।।

पूर्वं कृतानि दुरितानि मया तु यानि स्मृत्वाखिलानि ह्रदयं परिकम्पते मे।

ख्याता च ते पतितपावनता तु यस्मात् । तस्मा. ।।5।।

दुखं जराजननजं विविधाश्च रोगा: काकश्वसूकरजनिर्निरय च पात: ।

ते विस्मृते: फलमिदं विततं हि लोके । तस्मा. ।।6।।

नीचोऽपि पापवलितोऽपि विनिन्दितोऽपि ब्रूयात्तवाहमिति यस्तु किलैकवारम् ।

तं यच्छसीश निजलोकमिति व्रतं ते । तस्मा. ।।7।।

वेदेषु धर्मवचनेषु तथागमेषु रामायणेऽपि च पुराणकदम्बके वा ।

सर्वत्र सर्वविधिना गदितस्त्वमेव । तस्मा. ।।8।।
